OneDrive stops syncing, you select Resume, and shortly afterwards it pauses again. Several users describe this behaviour in Microsoft Q&A and Tech Community discussions published in the second half of October 2026. In some cases, the problem persists even after reinstalling the app.
These reports deserve attention, especially when document changes remain waiting to upload. As of 30 October 2026, however, the sources consulted do not establish that Microsoft has identified a single defect behind all these cases, or a specific release that resolves this set of reports.
Here is what users are reporting, what related accounts on Reddit add, and how to distinguish an expected pause from behaviour that needs further investigation.
What users are reporting on Microsoft Q&A
The discussion “OneDrive pausing”, opened on 25 October, starts with a user describing recent pauses on a desktop PC and questioning whether the Windows Feature Experience Pack might be involved. Other participants report similar behaviour.
One comment gives a specific configuration:
| Component | Version reported by the user |
|---|---|
| OneDrive | 26.189.0928.0007 |
| Operating system | Windows 11 Pro 26H2 |
| Windows build | 26300.9711 |
These details describe one reported case. They do not define the full range of affected versions or demonstrate that this build is the cause. The original reference to the Feature Experience Pack also remains the post author’s hypothesis.
A second discussion, “ONEDRIVE (personal) sync pausing randomly”, was opened on 20 October. Its author says they have to resume syncing manually and that uninstalling and reinstalling the client did not resolve the problem.
A further report appeared on Tech Community on 27 October, again describing pauses that had started recently. At the time it was consulted, the thread contained no diagnosis or solution.
Chrome and Firefox: a possible connection to investigate
In the second Q&A discussion, some participants associate the pause with opening their browser. One user reports this with Firefox; another describes it with Chrome, including after disabling extensions and trying Incognito mode. A further comment suggests that leaving the transfers panel open appeared to help.
These observations may help someone reproduce the problem, but they do not demonstrate that Chrome or Firefox is responsible. There is not enough evidence to identify a shared cause across the cases described.
We therefore do not recommend changing browsers or installing an experimental browser release on the strength of a single comment. If you notice the same connection on your PC, record the time and check whether the behaviour repeats. That information can help support investigate.
What the Reddit discussion adds
The Reddit discussion “OneDrive not syncing or uploading files in Windows 11 (sync paused)” also contains a relevant account. In a comment dated 27 October, a user says they encountered the same problem and saw an apparent improvement after running the OneDrive reset command.
The evidence is limited: the comment does not provide a complete configuration or establish how long the improvement lasted. It is therefore insufficient to confirm that a reset provides a lasting fix.
In the initial Q&A discussion, another participant revises their first impression after using the command: there seemed to have been an improvement, but the pause returned. These experiences need to be considered together, rather than treating an isolated favourable result as a guaranteed solution.
Has Microsoft confirmed a new OneDrive bug?
Microsoft’s public page for recent OneDrive issues, consulted on 30 October, did not list a specific entry covering the recurring pauses described in these threads. The page showed 20 April 2026 as its latest update, so it should not be treated as a complete, real-time account of all the reports being discussed.
The appropriate description is community reports with no established shared cause. A reply on Microsoft Q&A does not automatically mean that Microsoft has opened an official incident, even when that reply recommends documented troubleshooting procedures.
When an automatic pause is expected
OneDrive can pause syncing intentionally. Microsoft documents automatic pauses when Windows enters battery saver mode or detects a metered connection. Users can also pause syncing manually for 2, 8 or 24 hours.
Before treating a pause as a fault, check the message in the OneDrive window and the circumstances in which it appears. A working internet connection can still be classified as metered.
If you have both a personal account and a work account, check the icon and status for the account affected. Microsoft allows syncing for the two accounts to be paused and resumed independently.
What to do if OneDrive keeps pausing
1. Read the status before selecting Resume
Open the cloud icon in the notification area and keep a record of the message, preferably with a screenshot. Then select Resume syncing and check whether transfers restart.
It is important to distinguish an explicit pause from other states. A stalled transfer, a sign-in prompt or a file error is not necessarily the same problem. Recording the message before taking action helps preserve the most useful clue.
2. Check your sync preferences
From the OneDrive icon, open Settings > Sync and back up and review the available preferences for automatic pauses. The path can vary with the app and account type; Microsoft notes that some business settings may not be available to the user.
If a metered connection is causing the pause, decide whether you want to allow transfers over that network: the choice can affect data usage. On a laptop, consider battery consumption as well. Changing these preferences addresses an expected condition; it is not a proven fix for the October reports.
3. Compare the behaviour before and after opening apps
If you have noticed a connection with your browser, save your work and observe OneDrive before and after opening it. Repeat only as much as needed to establish whether the behaviour is reproducible, recording the steps.
This comparison is a diagnostic check suggested by user accounts, rather than an official fix. Avoid changing the browser, network and sync client at the same time: if the outcome changes, it becomes difficult to identify which action made a difference.
4. Restart the client, without confusing this with a reset
You can close OneDrive from the cloud icon’s menu, then reopen it by searching for OneDrive in the Start menu, as described in Microsoft’s documentation.
If syncing starts working again, check that it actually finishes the pending operations and watch for another pause. A temporary recovery does not establish that the underlying problem has been resolved.
5. Consider a reset if the initial checks do not help
Resetting the client is a Microsoft troubleshooting procedure for some sync issues, but it is not a confirmed fix for every case described here. It resets settings and triggers a fresh sync; you may need to choose your synced folders again.
Before proceeding, save your work and keep a separate copy of important documents with recent changes that have not yet uploaded. Do not delete the OneDrive folder to prepare for a reset.
Press Win + R and run:
%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
If Windows cannot find the file, use the path that matches the installation on your PC:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe" /reset
Or:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe" /reset
These are alternative paths, not three commands that must be run in sequence. Afterwards, reopen OneDrive from Start, allow syncing to finish and check whether the problem returns.
On business PCs, check the applied policies too
For administrators, Microsoft documents two specific settings: Continue syncing on metered networks and Continue syncing when devices have battery saver mode turned on. They can be managed through Group Policy or Intune and change the behaviour of the corresponding automatic pauses.
Before deploying changes, check which policies are actually applied and collect comparable cases: the same client version, account type and network conditions. These settings have a specific purpose; they are not a general solution for every stalled sync.
Check that your documents have reached OneDrive online
The practical risk of an unnoticed pause is continuing to work under the assumption that your changes are already available on other devices. For urgent documents, also check the copy on the OneDrive website for the correct account, comparing its contents and modification date.
Keep a separate copy of changes that have not uploaded before trying more invasive steps. Do not delete files or folders to “unblock” transfers: that is not what the procedures described here recommend.
If the behaviour persists, collect your OneDrive version, Windows version and build, account type, exact status message and the steps immediately preceding the pause. You can find the installed version in the client’s information. These details, together with a reproducible example, make a support report useful.
