Very often we need to transfer or move a Windows 10 license, especially if it’s retail licenses. Let’s look specifically at the requirements for being enabled for the transfer and how to execute it.
Transfer requirements
In order for a license transfer to be possible, you should meet or be in one of these situations:
- if we have updated starting from Windows 7 or Windows 8, with a RETAIL starting license (purchased from the shopkeeper or online)
- Available transfers: 1
- if we purchased a Windows 10 FULL retail license from an offline or online retailer
- Transfers available: unlimited
If we are in one of these situations below we would NOT be enabled to upgrade:
- If we upgraded from Windows 7 or Windows 8 with an OEM starting license, we are NOT enabled to upgrade
- If we purchased a computer running Windows 10 from a shopkeeper, where we find a pre-installed OEM license, we are NOT enabled to upgrade.
Note: The OEM license is usually preinstalled with the computer, most of the licenses in use are in fact purchased together with a computer, being in fact OEM.
How do I know what license I have?
For this, it is advisable to use an operating system script, to have it press the WIN-X buttons and then open the command prompt as an administrator, now type:
slmgr.vbs /dlv
later we will see a screen with all the details of the license currently in use in the system, we are interested in the Description and the Channel product key: we could find the word RETAIL or OEM.
Now that we’ve figured out whether or not we meet the requirements, let’s move on to the actual transfer or license.
How to deactivate the license on your old computer
Even for this operation we have to resort to the slmgr.vbs tool, first you have to disable the current license in use in the system.
To do this, press the WIN-X buttons and then open the command prompt as an administrator, now type:
slmgr.vbs /upk
We can now use the product key we have to install the license on another computer.
How to activate the license on the new computer
If we have a RETAIL Windows 10 license, we can enter the PK directly during the installation phase. For those who start from a RETAIL license of another operating system can follow these tips:
From version 1511 of Windows 10 you can use the Windows 7 or Windows 8 PK to activate the system, this will be dutiful and appropriate to do it directly from the operating system started and not during the installation process, in which you will have to ignore or skip PK requests.
To enable it, you can proceed from Settings > Update and Security > Activation, or press the WIN-X buttons and then open the command prompt as an administrator, now type:
slmgr.vbs /ipk YOUR PRODUCT KEY
Next, press the WIN-R buttons and type:
slui.exe 4
it will show on screen the procedure for the phone activation of the product, the only possible way for such operations.
